Automotive Guide and Driving in Japan

Posted on December 23rd, 2006 in Uncategorized by <ADMINNICENAME>

To buy an auto in Japan is not that diffficult because Japanese car makers are some of the biggest car operations in the world.  You can have your pick of Toyota, Nissan, Honda etc., including many small economical auto models that are not available in the United States.  Dealerships of the various brands of cars sell them both new, and as a used car. Cars can also be bought at auto auctions. Owning a car can be expensive, from insurance to the car inspections, called “shaken”.  The tolls are fairly high.  For example, on the car route from Nagoya to  Shirakawago and Takayama in Central Japan, the toll is about the equivalent of $35, unless you want to use slower roads without tolls.  If you own a car in a big city, it is imperative to own or rent a parking spot.  Gas is more expensive than in the United States.  In fact, many people in Tokyo, and other large metropolitan areas do not even own a car, and use the extensive system of public transportation all of the time.  Car taxes and insurance are quite high and so are inspections, known as the “shaken” every two years, which start three years after you purchase a new car.
Shaken is a mandatory safety inspection that costs the equivalent of $100 to $200, plus a weight tax that can be as high as $400.  Annual tax to own a car depends on the miles per gallon of a car and can be from $80 to $400.  There is also a tax when you buy a car.  This is similar to the state auto buying taxes in the United States that can range as high as $3000 to $4000.  As in the states, the car dealership is quite happy to help you fill out the numerous additional forms, the additional insurance you may need on the car body and repairs, and the transfer of ownership in a used car.
The procedure to acquire used car through auto auctions, seem to be quite similar to that in the United States.  Some people feel you have a chance to get a better price through a car auctions, others feel you a safer dealing with an established used car dealership.

There are also quite a few complaints that the system to get a Japanese driving license can be quite complicated.  Foreigners in Japan have to get a Japanese driving license after one year; they can no longer use an international license.  The written test is reportedly fairly easy if one is prepared, but you also have to take a road test, which is fairly complicated.  United States drivers are allowed to take a simplified driving test, while citizens of Canada and other countries are allowed to avoid the road test entirely.  Most road signs, especially in the big cities are in Japanese and English. Take note that drivers drive on the left side of the road, and the driver sits and drives on the right side of the car, that is, the opposite of that in the United States. It’s possible to get a driving manual in English, and even a driver’s education course in English, but during the actual test, you will have to understand enough Japanese to understand the commands of the driving instructors.  Luckily, these are fairly short, and can be memorized, along with the driving course, in advance.

Japanese Antiques

Posted on December 23rd, 2006 in Uncategorized by <ADMINNICENAME>

Japanese antiques have been admired throughout the world for their exquisite workmanship and their simplicity and beauty.  It may be a bit difficult for you to go to Japan to tour these collectibles in person, but now these antiques are available for your shopping pleasure online, directly from Japan.

One form of antiques is traditional Japanese furniture, or Tansu, which refers to a style going back to the 7th century.  These are generally wooden cabinets and trunks made in the traditional Japanese manner.  Is has a certain similarity to Chinese antiques of the period.  The use of Japanese furniture, and most of the antiques and collectibles we have available to us today com from the period of the Meiji restoration, which is after 1868.  That is when Japan abandoned the feudal system and the capitol was moved to Tokyo.
If you are in the market for Japanese antiques and collectibles, it is necessary to be able to recognize some of the features of the genuine item.  Antique Japanese furniture is unfinished inside.  Drawers do not have guide bars, but slide on boards that they rest on.  Wooden pegs are generally used to put the furniture together.  In later items, in the beginning of the 20th century, sometimes iron nails are used.
The straight lines and simplicity of Japanese furniture have made them popular throughout the world, but usually through copies.  Real antiques and collectibles are harder to obtain.  Woods used include cedar and cypress and occasionally the rarer paulownia wood.  Frontal portions of chests are drawers are often made from heavier woods such as cherry, chestnut or persimmon.  Different lacquers are used to cover the furniture, including transparent ones and those that are opaque, including red and black lacquer.

For example, a Japanese Furniture Mizuya Kitchen Chest, an antique from before 1920 is available online.  Cedar and cypress woods are used with a geometrical type of decoration painted in lacquer on the wood in the front.  The chest has no legs, which is typical in a society where people sat on mats on the floor.  Some Japanese furniture can be quite simple, though beautiful, and many of these items are quite small, in that they were made for Japanese sitting on the ground.  A red lacquer table with black accents is only 19 inches tall, with a matching mirror.  Various ceramics and jugs go perfectly with this furniture.  Hibachi gourds are decorated with scenes of mountains, boats and rivers.  Lovely sake jugs have ornamental Japanese writing on them.  Authentic Japanese tea sets can be added as well. The accents that these ceramics add to the furniture enhance their authentic Japanese feeling.

Other Japanese antiques and collectibles are vintage Japanese kimonos.  The authentic materials for kimonos are silk, cotton and linen, never synthetic materials.  Obis are the decorative belts worn around the kimonos. Authentic Japanese fabrics include Aizome, which is dyed with indigo dye or “Ai” in Japanese. The dye is now synthetically made. Some of the designs are made using a paste that stops the dye, and leaves the design or pattern in which the paste was painted as a white area.  These items are known as Shibori, similar to other tie-dyed crafts.

Kyoto Walking Tours

Posted on December 23rd, 2006 in Uncategorized by <ADMINNICENAME>

Kyoto is one of the oldest cities of Japan and is the former imperial capital of Japan until 1868, when Japan’s capital was moved to Tokyo.  It has a very traditional appearance, with hundreds of Buddhist temples and shrines.  It is a do-not-miss site in a Japan tour, and a good city to do a walking tour in.  Kyoto is a fairly compact and flat city that is surrounded by mountains on three sides. The history of Kyoto is a long one, steeped in the culture of Japan. Many of the key sightseeing spots are close together, and can be combined into a number of walking tours.

A key area to do a walking tour is the Eastern Mountain District, or the Higashiyama district.  The tour starts at a Zen temple, the Nanzen-ji, one of Kyoto’s best-known temples. It is home to a magnificent Zen rock garden.  There are many other temples worth exploring.  You may want to take a private tour of these areas.  The trail leads to the Tetsugaku-no-michi (The Path of Philosophy).  This road is particularly lovely in the spring when the cherry blossoms bloom on each side of the street.

Not far from the Philosopher’s Path is the Eikando Temple, also known as the Zen-rinji Temple.  This was built in the year AD. 856 and is famous for a statue of the Amida Buddha.  With the right private tour guide, you can find out more of the history of this and other sites and interesting lore and traditions.

In Central Kyoto there is the old Imperial Palace which was the Emperor’s residence before the capitol was moved to Tokyo, and the Nijo Castle, which was the castle of the Shogun. The old Imperial Palace includes many interesting old buildings and several gardens on 27 acres. The Kyoto Imperial Palace clearly shows the Japanese taste for simple decor at the residence of the Imperial family until the capital was relocated to Tokyo in 1868. The Nijo Castle is a huge area complete with stone walls, and gardens, and was the castle of the Tokugawa shogun.

Sites worth adding to your walking tour are the Temple of the Silver Pavilion,
It was built in 1482 for the Shogun, and is designed for the beautiful tea ceremony, and moon viewing ceremony, with a beautiful garden of sand, rocks, and moss. One of the small sand hills is designed to resemble Mount Fuji. Japanese rock gardens like this one have been copied all over the world.

The Nomura art museum features mainly of objects used in tea ceremonies, calligraphy, ceramics, and the traditional masks used in Japanese theatre, Noh masks.  Nearby is the Heian Shrine, one of Kyoto’s most famous shrines.  It’s a replica of Kyoto’s first city hall. The garden is famous for its cherry blossoms in spring, and its falling maple leaves in the autumn.

Also worth seeing is the Ryoanji Temple, a Zen Buddhist temple. It is well known for its dry garden of rocks over white sand, representing the philosophy of Zen. Another celebrated temple is the Kinkakuji Temple (Golden Pavilion).  It is Kyoto’s most popular temple and Japanese garden. Many tours end at the Kyoto Handicraft Center, one of the best places in Japan to buy traditional souvenirs.  You can design your own wood cut for block printing with ink.

Health and Medical Tours in Asia

Posted on December 23rd, 2006 in Uncategorized by <ADMINNICENAME>

Opportunities for health tours in Asia abound. Such a health tour of Asia can focus on normal recreation, plus therapeutic practices in health spas and health clubs to promote better health and blood circulation.  In terms of medical tours, plastic and cosmetic surgery is very popular, with some locations also offering advanced heart disease, cancer and other medical treatment at a low cost.  In general, the cost of these tours does not have to be exorbitant, and in some cases they are partially or totally covered by medical insurance.

In Thailand, a premier stop on a medical tour is the Bangkok International Medical Center, which specializes in operations for foreign medical patients.  The Bangkok Heart Institute was established in 1989, and has a staff of cardiologists, cardiac surgeons and other specialists.  Specialties of this hospital include all types of modern heart surgery.  State-of the-art angioplasty is available, and even some relatively new technologies like off-pump surgery.  This is actual open heart surgery, without the need to put the patient on a heart-lung machine. This reduces the time of hospital stay, and the length of recuperation time of the patient.

In the city-state of Singapore, high-quality medical care has been more and more available for the general population and it has also become a key attraction for medical travel.  One high point of Singapore’s medical facilities is the John Hopkins Singapore International Medical Center.  Their oncology center treats a wide variety of cancers, including breast, ovarian, lung, stomach, colon, lymphoma, and prostate.  The rooms at the hospital fall in two categories; a VP Suite, with a single bedroom, a lounge and a bathroom, or else there is a single room with an attached bathroom.  In addition to surgery and treatment of cancers, the facility has an out-patient center to screen, diagnose and treat cancers that can be treated on an out-patient basis.

A well known beach resort in Thailand is Koh Samui.  The Samui clinic specializes in plastic surgery, including in cases of Gender Reassignment Surgery.  One of the operations performed at the Samui clinic is for the full conversion of males to a female sexual identity, with a vaginoplasty.  A vagina can be successfully formed by using various forms of skin grafts. Also available at Koh Samui are spas, and total wellness retreats.  Various programs at health spas that are available include detoxification, yoga, western medicine, Chinese medicine and fitness training.  Other therapeutic practices enjoyed in the health tour include saunas, steam baths, Thai massage, and hot and cold plunge pools to stimulate circulation.  Similar facilities exist in Malaysia, and the Philippines.

In Malaysia, there are currently 33 hospitals involved in medical tours and health tours.  There is also the Berjaya Langkawi Beach and Spa Resort, on beautiful Burau Bay and the leading “lifestyle resort”, the Sutera Harbour Resort and Spa, located in Kota Kinabalu, in Sabah.  Sutera Harbour is located near the Poring Hot Spring and Nature Reserve.

In the Philippines, there is an extensive medical tourism industry.
The most common procedures are cosmetic and plastic surgery and weight loss surgery.

The Philippines has been growing as a destination of choice for health tours and medical travel because of their world class physicians, modern technology, and the Filipino style of hospitality and low cost. The Philippines also has such award winning health spas as the Farm at San Benito, and has been promoted by the Philippine Tourist Industry as the “Island of Wellness”.
